As the title says the shifter in my 98 x-cab is physically hard to shift. Running or not, pump the clutch or not... This happens after it has sat for a couple hours. After driving 20+ miles it shifts just fine and doesn't take a sumo wrestler to get it into gear.

I have no clue what would cause this! Thought bad synchros but that wouldn't get better after driving it a while! This one has me stumped!!!

The nv1500 is specified to use 2.9 quarts of GM synchromesh WITH FRICTION MODIFIERS, GM part numbers:

-12377916
-88900399
(supersedes 12377916)

Unless alternate fluids specifically said they replace
12377916 or 88900399, I wouldn't use it in my nv1500.

I just got some for my truck. The new part number for it is 89900333. I even tried seeing if they had that number at another dealer. Same story.

Yeah, 88900333 replaced the old 12345349...the regular synchromesh. Gm does not recommend that for the NV1500, which the OP has. The correct fluid is Synchromesh with FRICTION MODIFIERS, pn 88900399. On this ACDelco page, you can see they recommend the 88900399:

http://www.acdelco.com/html/pi_vehcare_lub.htm

I'm not saying 88900333 won't work in the NV1500, but it's not the fluid GM specifies. Since 88900399 is used only in the NV1500, you have to look around.

That was what I thought too, not saying you're wrong but they will say that is the fluid to run in them since that replaces the old number.

I don't think that Valvoline has a replacement for Synchromesh with Friction Modifiers. They are very deceptive in their literature. They say:

Valvoline Synchromesh Manual Transmission fluid:

http://www.carquestprofessionals.com/catalogs/chemicals/V-8070%20Manual%20Transmission%20Fluid%20Application%20Guide%20%206.6.13.pdf

Recommended for General Motors and Chrysler vehicles including GM part numbers 12345349, 12377916 and 12345577 as well as Chrysler part number 4874464.

Since they list 12377916, one would be lead to believe that this is suitable for use as a replacement fluid for GMs friction modified transmission fluid 12377916 (88900399). However if one reads further in the document, on page 6, you see that they only recommend that their Synchromesh be used for "TOP OFF ONLY". That clearly tells me that their Synchromesh is not a replacement for 12377916 (88900399).

hi_im_sean - I did not see your last comment before this post. I looked at the Valvoline because I thought maybe there was a legitimate replacement, but it seems to be a little disingenuous on their part.

There seems to be a lot of confusion on what is used in the NV1500. The NV1500 uses Sychromesh with friction modifiers, not plain Sychromesh. If you are using GM fluids, Synchromesh and Synchromesh with friction modifiers are different fluids. Period.

Synchromesh with friction modifiers: 88900399 it replaces 12377916 and 10-4014. These bottles say friction modified.

Plain Synchromesh: 88900333 it replaces 12345349 and 10-4006. These bottles do not say friction modified.

****************

My 2001 S10 with the NV1500 calls for the 12377916 in the manual. When I put this number into any number of sites, like these:

http://www.gmpartsgiant.com/parts/gm-fluid-12377916.html
http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/results.cfm?partnumber=12377916

They specifically tells me that 12377916 has been replaced by 88900399 and not 88900333.

****************

In a nutshell, GM recommends 88900399 (which replaces 12377916 and 10-1014) for the NV1500 and nothing else. If you want to put something else in there, that's fine with me, but this is what GM recommends.

Cheers.

my mistake, i assumed there was only one syncromesh, had i read your comment i would have been able to figure that out. valvoline sycromesh mtf specifically replaces 12345349. thanks for the info.

this is what i was referencing
http://www.valvoline.com/pdf/vps_manual_transmission_fluid.pdf

to ad to the ambiguity: i had first gone to their website and they dont even lest manual transmission fluids under the products. if you search any term related to syncromesh, mtf, etc, nothing comes up at all. i found the pdf from a google search. i would guess they are re-branding some other manufactures sycromesh. penzoil also makes a syncromesh...

in either case the valvoline is considered the "supreme" mtf in the spec miata world. just like the s2000 guys like it. it seams to clear up a lot of synchro issues. i run it mine, it completely got rid of a 3rd gear grind.

Yeah, their spec sheet looks suspiciously like the Pennzoil sheet. Also, notice that they also say:

and for top up applications in GM Part Number 12377916

which I guess means that if the fluid level drops a little, you can top it off. They still don't want to commit to recommending it as a replacement for the 12377916 (88900399). I'm not really sure what the issues behind the scenes are as to why GM formulated the Friction Modified version, but there must be something they were concerned about. Perhaps there is a corner condition in certain temperatures or something similar.

I'm not concerned with having the exact fluid just yet anyways. This trans is bout to come apart anyway. But yes I was saying that they will tell you another number. I know they don't have it at all in the 2 dealerships I went to. Not sure what I'm gonna do when I get a good trans in here.
